The girocard – the most widely used card payment method in Germany – has been a regular feature of media coverage in recent weeks and months. In the process, there has often been erroneous talk that it should be abolished or discontinued. In fact, it merely replaces a function that is often included on the girocard with another solution. The direct debit procedure also associated with this is the a) cheapest, b) most data friendly and c) most easily reversible and therefore fairest payment method. I.e. the best payment method when the customer and merchant are “clean”. Everything else involves more effort. This is also what the girocard stands for.
