The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation of the European Union , with which the rules for the processing of personal data by private companies and public bodies are standardized across the EU. This is intended on the one hand to ensure the protection of personal data within the European Union and on the other hand to guarantee the free movement of data within the European internal market . The regulation replaces Directive 95/46 / EC from 1995 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of data .
